Cinema: A Mystery beyond Definition

“Cinema making is a mystery; no one can define and describe a good cinema. Elements of poetry and music should outweigh material and technical considerations”, said legendary German filmmaker Werner Herzog who was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement at the 15^th IFFK. Speaking at the Meet-the-Press held today at the Festival Office, Herzog said he preferred to describe himself as Bavarian athlete of cinema rather than as an artiste. Rating IFFK as being “unique and not comparable”, he said that the Festival has an incredible international scope and yet retains a strong cultural identity of Kerala. It showcases films that are neglected by media and distribution companies.

Co-production with all its advantages of bringing global reach to cinema and creating a universal language for filmmaking, calls for great efforts at coordination and actor management. Though he had travelled far and wide as part of his filmmaking, there were strong evidences of Bavarian culture in all his films. He grew up in a remote mountainous Bavarian village and did not know about the telephone or the radio and had not known the existence of a cinema till a touring cinema visited his village, when he was 11 years old, the veteran director of 60 films said. Responding to a question, he said that the modern German cinema has young filmmakers with interesting themes, making it worth following.

Vikramadithya Motwane, the director of ‘Udaan’, the first official entry from the country in a decade spoke about the overwhelming response generated to the film at the Cannes. “It was a learning experience, something which helped us learn the mechanics of distributing a film”. Mohan Raghavan, the debutant director of ‘T.D.Dasan Std. VI B’ was also present.

A book titled ‘Malayalam Films 2010’ in English brought out by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy was released by its Chairman K.R.Mohanan by handing over the first copy to Werner Herzog, who was the centre of attention of one and all in the thickly attended Press Meet.

‘Pururavas and Urvashi’ is one of the most illustrious paintings of Raja Ravivarma.

It portrays the intense love between the two epic characters – as in every age an immortal love that is frustrated by the ‘powers-that-be’.

Pururavas was extremely fond of birds and. The celestial beings above get envious of the sublime love of this mortal and sought ways to break his selfless devotion. They sent Urvasi, the enchanting apsaras to lure him and destroy his powers.

Urvasi had always been in love with Pururavas. She approached him as a village girl to lure him with carnal offerings. Urvasi gradually lost herself in her love for him.

Seeing their plans being upset, the gods above called her back. Though she knew she was being cheated, she had to keep her word. She has to return to her own world. It is this heartbreaking moment of parting that Ravivarma captured in his immortal painting.

Running parallel to the ‘story’ of the painting, is the relationship between the painter and Sugandha, the model. She also comes into his world from another one, and an intense relationship develops between the two. But once the assignment is over, she has to return. Moreover, the ‘society’ around them is intolerant to their love and its tumultuous depths.

‘Makaramanju’ (The Mist of Capricorn) thus portrays a situation where the creator and the creation, the painter and the model, transform into the very subjects of their creation.

Director’s Statement

Ravivarma was the first to usher in a humanistic revolution in Indian

visual sensibility. His gods, modelled on men and women from the

society around him, became the icons in the prayer rooms of millions

of Indian lower caste people. This multitude was for centuries denied

entry into the hindu temples, which were exclusive centres of

classical the classical art tradition too, for centuries. This revolution through art, has fascinated me.

Another aspect of Ravivarma's art that attracted me was the way in

which he portrayed the women of Indian legends. He always chose to

depict dramatic moments, foregrounding the agony and solitude of these

women, who suffer as mere pawns in the power play of a male dominated

world. The paintings depicting Sita, Draupadi, Urvashi, Menaka and Tilottama are examples. These paintings were done much before Indian writers started experimenting with such subaltern readings of epics.

The path breaking efforts of Ravivarma had encountered serious

resistance from the conservative society. His personal life, and his

relations with his models were also quite turbulent. To go deeper into

the mind of such a creative artist, I have chosen to interweave

moments from his life with the story of Pururavas and Urvashi, which

is the subject of one of his paintings. This structure evolved from my

effort to find a way to express the turmoils of a creative mind, where

the interplay of reality and fantasy, contemporaneity and tradition

gave rise to creations of exquisite beauty and feeling.

Screening begins at 15th IFFK

The screening of films at the 15^th International Film Festival started at Kalabhavan theatre today. Two films from the Forget Africa category ‘Cameroon Love Letter’, directed by Khavn De La Cruz and ‘Unreal Forest’ by Jakrawal Nilthamrong were screened in the opening slot. Sharman Ong’s ‘Memories of a burning tree’ followed by Pia Sawhney’s ‘Rwanda: Take Two’ are being screened at the Sree theatre.

Screenings of two films from the World Cinema section are also on. While the Polish film Little Rose, directed by Jan Kidawa- Blonski is on Kairali, the Turkish film ‘Black and White’ by Ahmed Boyacioglu is being screened at Kalabhavan.

Sotigui Kouyate: Bridging Cultures through Art

“I’m a storyteller, a griot... Our strength lies in our culture. Everything I do as a storyteller, a griot, stems from this rooting and openness”, said actor, dancer, musician and composer Sotigui Kouyaté, one of the first Burkinabé (a landlocked country in West Africa) actors. In a befitting honour to the master actor, the 15^th IFFK has included a package titled ‘Tribute’, showcasing his five finest films.

An important bridge between African and Western cultures for 40 years, Sotigui Kouyaté was born in Mali to Gambian parents and made Burkinabe by adoption. , As a child, he enjoyed koteba (traditional African performance) and had a craze for football.. Kouyaté began his theatre career in 1966, when he appeared as adviser to the king in a historical play produced by his friend Boubacar Dicko. That year, he founded a theatre company in 1966 with 25 people and soon wrote his first play, ‘The Crocodile’s Lament’. From 1990 to 1996 Kouyaté toured the United States and Europe as part of La Voix du Griot (‘Voice of the Griot’), a storytelling theater show which he founded.

Kouyaté association with UK playwriter Peter Brook is legendary, which began with Brook’s adaptation of The Mahabharata in 1983. He has acted in over two films, including “Toula or the Water Spirit”, Courage of Others”, Keita: The heritage of the Griot”, “Mahabharata” and “Genesis”; all of which are included in the IFFK package.

“Toula or the Water Spirit” directed by Moustapha Alassane deals with the draught of a country and how a young tries to rescue his girl from a genie.The film “Courage of Others” by Christian Richard is a tale with documentary and historical importance. The other films included in this package are “Keita:The heritage of the Griot” by Dani Kouyate , “Mahabharata” by Peter Brook , “Genesis” by Cheik Oumar Sissoko and “Little Senegal” by Rachid Bouchareb.

The package also includes a documentary “A Modern Griot” directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, which is a portrait of Sotigui Kouyate and details the awe-inspiring actor. Through testimonies by Peter Brook, Jean-Claude Carriere, Jean-Pierre Guigane, and Sotigui Kouyate himself, Sotigui Kouyate: a Modern Griot dresses the portrait of one of Africa’s greatest actor now based in Paris. From Africa to Europe, the film unveils the multiple facets of Sotigui Kouyate, actor, musician and modern griot.

Describing the actor, Brook has said, “Sotigui was, for all of us who knew him, who worked with him and who became close to him, an absolutely unique person, incomparable with anybody of the past or present”. The films being presented in the IFFK will help film lovers discover the uniqueness of this man who viewed theatre and cinema as a medium to bridge cultural barriers.

Accentuating Voices of Women

The repertoire of films made by women include in the Women’s Films section of the 15^th IFFK comes as remarkable examples of how women have chosen to play flourishing parts in movie making in gross deviation to stereotypes.

The only documentary in this section, Leni Riefenstahl’s ‘Triumph of Will’ is a well known propaganda documentary made at the special request of Adolf Hitler. The film adores the Great Dictator with divinity and imparts him an evangelical quality. The Nuremberg Meet of the Nazi party is documented in the film. Leni’s technical panache gets revealed through her deft handling of the camera, use of telephoto lens and fresh approach to music and cinematography. The non-narrative structure of ‘Meshes of the Afternoon’ has made it a ‘trance film.’ Maya Deren, known for the singularity of her cinematic experience, imparts an intriguing and yet charming feel through the use of recurring motifs coupled with interruptive images.

Representing the spirit of French New Wave, Agnes Varda’s ‘Cleo from 5 to 7’ depicts the ephemerality of beauty. The two-hour long wait for the biopsy results of a young woman is given an exquisite touch with fleeting moods and excursions. Influenced by the Czech New Wave, director Vera Chytolova in her ‘Daisies’ portrays two women named Marie. Both of them decide to act against the accepted ways and at the same time establish their ‘unique self’ by choosing different tracks. Vera attempts to disregard conventional ideas of womanhood and feminity through her film. ‘All Screwed Up’ is a socio-political comedy built upon the collective life of a few immigrants. The Italian director Lina Wertmuller makes loud anarchic laughter that affirms life, while deriding the preoccupation with work, consumerism and sexual security.

Films to be screened in this section venture to open up the new vistas of liberal feminism, as a clarion call for setting up new avenues.

The Legends Remembered

Death is like a clown without a sense of the stage, snatching away lives at the oddest of hours and times! The year 2010 has also been depressing in that it marked the untimely demise of some of the stalwarts of the Malayalam film industry. Attempting to retrace their good work is the section ‘Homage’ of the 15^th International Film Festival of Kerala, with a bouquet of seven films.

‘Lal Salam’, directed by Venu Nagavalli portrays the life and times of a political leader who was committed to ideology. Through the depiction of characters, the contest between idealism and pragmatism gets unravelled. In the horror thriller ‘Manichitrathazhu’, we listen to the dulcet tones born out of the strings of the doyen of music, M.G Radhakrishnan. The movie levitates viewers through the less explored lanes of whims and fantasies. Known for his prolific song writing skills, Gireesh Puthencheri dons the role of a screenwriter in ‘Vadakkumnathan’. Its thread moves around the pitfalls in the life of a Sanskrit scholar Bharata Pisharody and his adjustment/mal adjustments to societal living after years of anonymity In the multi-starrer blockbuster movie, ‘Chemmeen’, the character Nallapennu, played by Adoor Pankajam is remarkable. The film catches every nuance of lost love and fidelity through its plot that narrates the story of sea and seamen.

No one could easily forget the tender hearted goon ‘Haidros’ in Kireedam. By imparting life to such a character with great panache, Kochin Haneefa redefined the hitherto held image of a hooligan. Sreenath too played a significant part in the film. The poignant tale of a young man whose dreams and ambitions get shattered as a result of an encounter with a local gangster gets portrayed in the film.

Mankada Ravi Varma wields the camera for director Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s feature film debut ‘Swayamvaram’ with acme. This film which won prestigious National Awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Cinematography also brought the man with the movie camera accolades at the national level. Ushering waves of transition into Malayalam film aesthetics, it marked the first break into social realism. It was in director Abdul Aziz’z ‘Aval’ that Mankada Ravi Varma made his entry as a cinematographer. The film is a get-together of different artistic talents including Thoppil Bhasi, Vayalar, Ummer, Madhu, Santha Devi and so on.

The pioneering and rich work by each of these cherished members of the fraternity shall ever linger in our hearts.

High-Noon Films: Taking the Daring Route to Cinema

Cinema is the century’s metaphor. It is more metaphorical than anything

literary, says Jean Luc Godard the pioneer of French New Wave. The 60s and
70s witnessed such a phenomenon in the cinema world. And the Malayalam
filmdom was not to be left behind. It came out with powerfully portrayed tales
in different themes; something that was totally at odds with what existed. These
films created a slot for screening in mainstream theatres, called Noon shows.
Noon films were not only offbeat but also strikingly absorbed the vagaries of the
period.

The High-Noon package in the 15th International Film Festival of
Kerala is an attempt at remembering and revisiting Malayalam cinema of the
aforementioned period. Featured herein is ‘Utharayanam’ by G. Aravindan,
which has since been a great influence to the parallel movie making of Kerala. The
protagonist Ravi finds the world absurd and it is this critical perspective that leads
him to the search of the eternal truth. This film won the State Film Award for the
Best Film.

P. A Backer’s daring leftist political film ‘Khabani Nadhi Chuvannapol’ is
an eloquent tale of the entanglements of the Emergency period. The narrative
hinges on an affair between a radical political activist and a woman. The atrocities

of the Emergency have been tellingly projected. ‘Swapnadanam’ by K.G. George,
revolving around marital life, also comes under this package. It is not a mere
psycho drama but is rather chivalrous enough to reject the standard format of
popular cinema. ‘Ekakini’ the debut film by G.S. Panicker is a road movie. It casts
a woman who feels repelled when her partner tries to introduce his identity in
her. The repulsion she expressed was never explosive or verbal, but only a mere
quit from his life. ‘Amma Ariyaan’, the first film of the Odessa Collective and the
last by John Abraham is made in a cinema – veritae style, interweaving fact and
fiction. The political history of Kerala is juxtaposed with sentiments, topical visuals
of time and insights of the protagonist.

The High Noon package in the Fest presents a birds ‘- eye view on the fresh
and daring self consciousness that created history during the 60s and the 70s.
The perseverance of these film makers is still remembered and is immortal. It is
a pity that the negatives of most of these films have been lost or destroyed. The
brave attempt of these filmmakers to indulge in lengthy shots, long periods of
silence and even while stoically rejecting song – dance sequence deserve a salute.
Without doubt, these films shall emerge as a thought-provoking experience for
the audiences, especially the younger generation!

DOMINATE COMPETITION SECTION:

Spanish language Latin American films dominate in the Competitive Section, which is the most attractive part of the International Film Festival of Kerala. Including two Indian premieres, five out of the 14 feature films which contest for the prestigious Rs. 1 million Suvarna Chakoram award (The Golden Crow Pheasant Award) to the best feature film are from Spanish speaking Latin America. Two Malayalam films are also found place for the run

The other awards include The Silver Crow Pheasant Award, Best Debut Film Award, Audience Prize to the Director of the most popular film voted by the festival delegates, FIPRESCI Award, and Netpac Award for the best film in the competition section from Asia, chosen by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema.

Afro-American Director Julie Dash, heads the jury- who is a faculty at Universities- Harvard, Yale, Stanford and Princeton heads the jury.

The Last Summer of La Boyita, directed by Julia Solomonoff , which tells the story of a pre-adolescent world, Wine of Diego Fried, which deals with the encounter and disencounter between a man and a woman shot in mise en scène manner, Optical Illusions, a delightful satirical comedy that brings to the surface, pokes fun at our own assumptions of reality, and our own ways of looking at the world by the director Cristian Jimenez, Portraits in a Sea of Lies by Carlos Gaviria which gives the experiences of cousins merge with a portrait of Colombia, a country that has been in a civil war for the last sixty years and A Day in Orange by Alejandra Szeplaki of three girls unknown to one another and from different worlds but are bound together by an invisible strand, comprise the Spanish brigade in the competition section.

The entries from Malayalam filmdom comprise Palerimanikyam Oru Paathira Kolapathakathinte Katha by Ranjith Besides unraveling the design behind a murder, through a blend of politics, history, anthropology and criminology, the story throws light on the socio-political situations that existed in Kerala’s interiors till the middle of the last century and T.D. Dasan Std. VI B by Mohan Raghavan which deals the child’s desire to see his father, and the beginning is made when he gets a clue from a piece of paper he finds in his mother’s trunk. The wanderings of the boy’s mind and the real unravel of world which is a mix of dreams, desires and the present are portrayed in the movie.

The Japanese Wife of Aparna Sen about an Arithmetic teacher in a school in the rural area strikes up a longstanding friendship with a Japanese girl, Miyage, a pen-friend, and I am Afia Megha Abimanyu Omar by Onir, a film on issues and dilemmas that afflict and bruise modern society in India are the presence of Indian cinema in the competition.

Persian film Walking on the Rail by Babak Shirinsefat traces the interwoven, daily struggle for survival in the lives of social outcasts far removed from the political and social concerns of the well-off. The story itself is inspired from the true-life experience of real people.

Korean film Animal Town by Jeon Kyu-hwan deals with the uneventful daily lives of the two men in the depressing city are interrupted by a wild boar sighting. The description of a heartless city life and the shocking end deliver a chilling blow.

The Arabic film from Tunisia, Buried Secrets by Raja Amari, tells the myriad secrets of the members living in both the deserted house and its servants quarters.

Zephyr, a Turkish film by Belma Bas, is about a strong-willed adolescent girl’s determination to be with her mother who is about to leave her again. This makes her take a step that reveals the complex mind of the child.

The Egyptian film, Heliopolis by Ahmad Abdalla, is an ensemble drama which brings in focus a generation’s fight for their dreams in the face of harsh realities, brings in a sharp critique of Egyptian society matched by a nostalgia-drenched longing for life before the 1952 Revolution.

The jury also includes forerunner of the Kazakh new wave film maker ERMEK SHINARBAEV, with four feature films and eleven short films added to her credit. MARIA NOVARO, APICHATPONG in all are with the unconditioned frame works of film, that breaks the hectic Thai studio system. To conclude both screenplay writer and a still photographer SOONI TARAPOREVALA.

The Signature film of the 15th IFFK will be released at Kalabhavan theatre , Thiruvananthapuram on December 5th at 10.30 am. Minister for Transport Jose Thettayil will present at the function .

The 35 seconds film has been designed by the Toonz Animation Academy , Technopark , Thiruvananthapuram.

Following this, a film from the World Cinema Package is being screened.
